Yeah, that's one of the things that scares me in the idea of bear hunting (unless that hunt involves something chambered in .30-06, that is). They're fast, can notice you from afar, and have some serious stamina!

Ah, you have a better chance of getting killed by mountain lion, raccoon or a pissed off squirrel than a black bear, but once in Quetico Provincial Park, I had one throw a real cute hissy fit when i told him to go away.

My family used to go up to Camp Quetico fishing when I was a kid. This would have been late 90's. I recall that they did baited bear hunts in the off-season.

I live in northwest NJ where we definitely have an over abundance of bear. We do have a season for them but I've never had a desire to kill one, except on those occasions when one disrupts a sit. I've taken fox with my bow and want to take a coyote as their numbers are rapidly increasing due to the tremendous decline in trapping. Need some predator control.
I've had some really nice bear broadside at fifteen yards. I've had bear although not one of my favorite game meats except for the pastrami my processor makes. The only time I've come close to shooting one was when I was stalked and charged when leaving my stand one evening. Had an arrow nocked and was ready to let fly if it had come at me again. Fortunately for me, and it, it didn't.

False charge, they do that to get your attention. It works every time. Be careful for mama mooseys they don't know a damn thing about false charges. There was one on Basswood Lake, she would get up early just see if I was around, so she could kick my ass and see how fast I could run. I can tell you that moose slobber tastes funny.
