My first 25 Riser
Dreaming again .
After watching a few videos on Indoor Barebow Matches , I thought , that looks like fun , then I got this crazy idea that , hey , I can do that .
Before jumping in with a high dollar barebow riser, I decided to buy an inexpensive one to get my feet wet .
Its a WNS Explore DX . I already own a 21 version and liked it , so it was a no brainer to try the 25 one .
Came today and I set it up with a set of Long WNS Carbon/foam limbs . My first 70 bow .
Built a 10 strand string for it , slapped a stick on rest on it and shot a few arrows out of it.
Probably should get me some type of barebow weight thatll help stabilize the bow .
The combo shoots good . First shot from 20 yards was dead center gold .
Just need to build my endurance up some before next years indoor season .
Thinking of adding some string silencers , hard to get use to that string twang .

Re: My first 25 Riser
The only change I would suggest is a fat string, which is more stable for a target bow. Target shooters don't use skinny strings.

Re: My first 25 Riser
Might try limbsavers before string silencers. Could quiet down the bow enough for you without slowing the string down.

Re: My first 25 Riser
Gill, at your draw length - what be the poundage?
And what thinks you of the tiller and limb alignment hardware quality?
That handsome bow shouts "PICK ME UP AND SHOOT ME!"

Drawing about 28# @ 29” . That’s about all the arthritis in my fingers and hands will let me . I shoot until the fingers start going numb .
I wear a padded biking glove on my bow hand and can no longer grip a bow with the index finger and thumb . I have to wrap the fingers around the grip .
I’m shooting full length 1816’s , 30” arrow . 125g bullet point and rps inserts .
I got to shoot about 25-30 arrows this evening.
Had to raise the brace height a little and a lot of the vibration went away. Still got a twang in the string .
These risers are recommended to under 40# . The tiller and limb adjustment seem as good as most of my other risers . The limb bolts look to be either stainless or chrome plated Steel . On a lot of my risers , I think they’re aluminum.
Better than some , like my Fleetwood and my Cartel .
Nice riser for $99 .

Even 12 is skinny unless you are talking Dacron.
Standard for target is more like
16 strand D97
18 strand 8125
22 to 24 strand 8190
Silencers are definitely not used on target bows. They just slow the arrow down and keep you from scary the guy shooting next to you, especially if you are a stringwalker. I have the benefit of being left handed and shooting a loud bow. Imagine the guy next to me when I look him in the eye and crack an arrow off using a long crawl.

Re: My first 25 Riser
Get a modern string with enough strands to be stable. Usually 14-16s of D97 or FF+ is a good bet.

String silencers may not be legal for barebow.

I doubt I’ll be able to find any “Barebow” competition around where I live .
Most likely it’ll be NFAA indoor next spring. I think in NFAA I could shoot traditional class with this bow a stick on rest .
Just checked NFAA rules and in Traditional class I can use string silencers and can even use a stabilizer up to 12” .

You might consider avoiding gripping the bow and instead use a wrist or finger sling.

Hmmm? Just starting out with my first barebow (shot longbows before) 25" G1 with med - WNS C2 32# limbs -- the sales tech at Lancaster recommended a 14 strand D97 string that seems to shoot well -- what would be the advantage of a "fat string" and what would you consider "fat."

Re: My first 25 Riser
I was using fat relative to skinny. I usually follow BCY recommendations which is 16 strand for D97. 14 is not that different. I will be lighter so you may get a bit more speed. Many years ago I had a true fat string setup for indoor archery. It was either 20 or 22 strands of D97. The intent was more stability (harder to torque) and less speed since I want to get my point up closer to the target. Skinny may also dig into your tab more. The fat string has a flatter surface against the tab.
