This is why we have mud slides in California. San Diego County has some of the thickest, most impenetrable brush I have encountered. That is what is holding the mountains together, but is also what causes such high fire danger. There have been some devastating fires in San Diego County that burned lots of houses. Most of the serious fires we have are brush fires rather than forest fires. The brush is also on steep mountainsides, canyons and ridges.

Good morning, folks.

Were you or your community directly affected by the fires, Hank? I guess that the smoke wreaked a havoc over a large area.

First snow of the season here. Glad that changed the winter tires last night. The drive to work was surprisingly smooth, did not witness anything unusual when it comes to traffic.

Hopefully the snow stays. Makes for much lighter evenings. At the moment we have daylight from 8.32 am to 3.38 pm. Not to mention that the snow makes for much easier tracking.

Wishing everyone a pleasant day!

Morning, ladies and gents!

Took a day off yesterday, and then spent 4+ hours on the phone and email dealing with work problems! It totally messed up my range time. Think I'll just report 2-hours of vacation.

I've heard it said that work will ruin your life. That is true. But it does pay the bills!

Hank, I was stationed in Long Beach and San Diego. I remember the Santa Anna winds and the fires that it can bring. The Laguna Canyon fire while I was there was really bad , but I don't remember it ever being nearly as bad as what has happened over the past couple of years. Glad your doing ok. Hopefully things will get back to normal.

NIKKO, this summer/fall the California & all the other western fires impacted the air quality here in IOWA where I live. More than a 1,000 miles away, or so. I mean a little bit. The TV News weather reported it. We had a hazy sky for a solid month. I can't imagine how bad it must have been OUT THERE.

It was really bad here in Colorado as well, alot of times when we should have been able to see the mountains, you could not and the air quality was really bad, coupled with the fact we had more/larger fires this year than I can remember in the last 50+ years. Hopefuly things will recover and get better.

Good morning all. Just about to leave for a bit of a rove.. Really looking forward to it for two reasons ... a) i'm shooting a new bow made by my friend Pip Bickerstaffe. It's a reconstruction of the bow Leon Stemmler described in his 1940 book "Essentials of Archery". and b) I'm shooting some home made dogwood arrows I harvested less than 500 meters from my home .... should be an interesting morning

Stay safe everyone

Newsflash 09:30
CHANGE OF PLAN
Just took Otto out for a quick walk and my phone rang .... It was my shooting companion Gary.. Some of hiis night shift co-workers have tested Covid+ so he's self isolating. So I'll have a little shoot on my own later On the plus side I found another thicket of dogwood and cut 8 beautiful shafts.

I'm learning a new wind/water sport called windfoiling. The initial learning curve is near vertical, I spent my 1st hour basically failing to stand on the board. The second session I was standing 50% of the time and on the hydrofoil for a few seconds.
Today I was standing most of the time and foiling around 50% of that time. Just getting on the board is still a challenge in any sort of chop though.
Here is a short video of some folks who really know what they are doing on one to give you an idea of the sport:
