Default Length of Hoyt Excel with med limbs strung?

??

I only have longbows, so I'm not sure but think that a recurve ends up a bit shorter strung OAL?

We would need to know what the length of the Excel riser is, as there are 21" and 23" risers.

Do you happen to know which it is?

Most limb measurements are based on a standard 25" riser. (Tradtech limbs are an exception; they are based on a 17" riser, and draw weights are measured at minimum setting, instead of maximum setting) A medium limb would be a 68" AMO, as measured on a standard riser.

If you have an Excel that is 21", (4" shorter than standard) you would have a 64" AMO bow, which would require about a 61" actual length string. You would end up with an approx weight increase of 4 lbs as well.

If you have a 23" riser, (2" shorter than standard) you would have a 66" AMO bow, which would require about a 63" actual length string. You would gain about 2 lbs of draw weight in this case.

This is based on my understanding of Hoyt recommendations; if I'm incorrect, someone please correct me.

If you're asking about ACTUAL overall length when strung, it will depend on brace height, but I'd imagine you could guesstimate +1" over the string length to allow for limp tips.

E.

No problem at all, you're most welcome.

I'm still learning about ILF myself. It's a hoot!

Thanks, Steve. I guess that means I got all the math correct.

Oh, and I spotted a typo in my post: it's supposed to be 'LIMB' tips, not 'limp'.

Actually Hoyt recommends a string 3" (not 4") shorter than the bow. So for a 64" bow, you'd want a string 61" long. The actual length of a 21" Excel with medium limbs when strung is 61.5" from limb tip to limb tip when measured along the string (not along the contour of the bow). This is when braced at the middle of the range for brace height. Most ILF recurve limbs now call for strings 3" shorter than the bow, just the same as longbows. In olden days, the rule used to be 4" shorter for recurves and 3" shorter for longbows. Nowadays with ILF limbs, you're better served by going with 3" shorter on both. The only exception I can think of are the older Hoyt FX limbs.

I have two 21 inch Hoyt Excels. One with med limbs the other with longs. I ordered a 60 inch string for the bow with med limbs, which is a 64 inch bow. The string is too short, even after some initial stretch. The Hoyt manual says the bows require 3 inch shorter strings than overall length. I can't get to the lower end of the brace height range. So, the string I ordered for the 66 inch bow with the long limbs is a 63 incher.
I would go with Hoyts recommendations for string length so you can get full range of brace height for your tuning. Just thought I would chime in so you could learn from this dummy (me), mistake of not reading Hoyts manual.

Thanks, Floxter. I stand corrected!

I'll edit my post so that no one is mis-informed if they search it up.
