Default B50 Dacron - number of strands

I've searched and couldn't find (even my own) recommendations for B-50 strand counts at certain poundages. I don't make them very often, but here I am... gonna build a Dacron flemish for an old bow and can't remember what ought to work best without making a dang ROPE for a string.

Does it go something like this?

12-strand under 40 lb
14-strand between 40-50 lb
16-strand 50-60 lb

That sounds about right to me Piney. Look up the Brownell website - the chart should be in there.

I use the same strand counts as George.

Piney -

George and I are on the same wavelength. There's always a little fudging between the numbers though, for example I'll use 16 up to about 65.

Viper out.

I found a 10-strand with .020 center serve ('bout right for G-nocks), but it's too short and the loops aren't padded. These Groves limb tips and notches are skinny and look fragile as can be.

Think I will go with a 12-strand for 45#, pad the loops real good, and maybe .018 center serve for the G-nocks. The previous string on this bow was a 16-strand ROPE, ughhh.

Guess I better make this Dacron string about one inch too short, because I figure it will stretch nearly an inch won't it?

thanks guys... I wonder if the bow will end up having more noise or less noise with the skinnier string?

According to the chart that Brownell Used to put on the backside of their labels:

20-30# - 8 strand
25-35# - 10 strand
35-45# - 12 strand
45-55# - 14 strand
55-80# - 16 strand.

They also stated: For best results bowstring should be twisted 1/3 turn per inch and well waxed.

That is what I have always used.

What George said. When I make B-50 flemish strings for bows in the 50-60# range I use three, 5 strand lays which gives me a 15 strand string.(nut)

I made a 10 strand flemish for my wife's 25# bow and usually make a 15 -16 strand for heavier bows. However, I recently make a 12 strand string for my 45@28" Gull (low 50's for my draw length) to try and change the spine on my arrow shaft. I had some concerns until I read that the breaking strength of a single strand of Dacron is around 45# - 50#. So a 12 strand has the breaking strength of 10 times my bow weight.
