Default New 3-piece longbow

I modified my longbow 3-piece riser to slim it down here's how the riser looks with the limbs mounted. The limb butts are a bit over 1 3/8" wide and tips about 1/2" with the weight at 65# at 28" by the time I get it narrowed down to 1 1/16" at the but and 7/16" tips the weight should hit my 53#-55# goal at 28" and 66" n2n

Here's the riser shaped and ready for filler. It will be stained in a brn, grn, & blk camo pattern. The riser is cut 1/4" past center and is set up for a flipper rest and a cushion plunger. I will build a shelf that can be stuck on the flat shelf if I want to shoot off the shelf. I still need to finish the tips, lighten the bottom limb, and time the limbs. It shoots good split finger but I want it set up for 2 under.

Unbraced 66" N2N

Braced at 7 1/4"

Drawn to 29" but not leveled

Since it is a hunting bow I decided to go with camo paint. I'll do a FD curve and shoot it through the chrono tomorrow when the paint is cured.

Here's the 29" FD curve Good energy storage tomorrow the chrono will tell how efficiently it puts that energy into the arrow.

If you don't mind me asking, what paint are you using? And how are you achieving the camo pattern? Just masking tape?

I'm using the rustolium camo paints and start by spraying the darkest first and putting tape strips, then paint the lighter green and add bigger strips, then paint the lightest tan. Once dry I remove the tape. Once all the lettering is on I'll spray it with VHT clear wheel finish.

OK here's the fd/speed results right at my draw length. Using a release & measured at 53.25# at 29" Stored energy 50.32ftlbs and SE/PDF of 94.5% arrow speed 203 fps for 48.677ftlbs kinetic energy and 96.735% efficiency. Way better than I'd hoped.
Measured finger shot: 53.25# at 29" Stored energy 50.32ftlbs and SE/PDF of 94.5% arrow speed 196fps for 46.309ftlbs kinetic energy and 92.028% efficiency.

Who the heck keeps looking at this? It should be interesting to see the response on the carbon backed one I'm doing research on. Hope this has helped someone.

It's really interesting!

What is the riser made of? I saw a black strip in the unpainted work in progress. Was it some sort of phenolic? Is that how you also made it 1/4" cut past center?

The riser is made up of 5/16" strips of hickory glued vertically with .030 fiberglass epoxied in-between. There was a top and bottom piece. The bottom one was shaped in a curve with flat ends for the limb pads. That had a layer of .030 fiberglass covered with a 1/16" layer of phenolic. Once the limbs were mounted the upper piece was shaped to fit the bottom and epoxied together using stainless steel screws to anchor the ends to the bottom section. I wasn't sure it would hold up but no problems. I'm doing a miniature version for my wife, maybe one for an archery shop owner, and maybe one for me. I may just make a set of limbs to mount to my angle iron riser that I'm doing a rust finish on. Can we say rat bow.

Decided to modify my bed frame riser and make it trimmer and a rat riser. I've got the rust job done and like it. I'm playing with the old limb design and will probably do a crackle finish on them. I'm still deciding on building a set with the new design and carbon backed.

I like that. Sort of a Mad Max bow.

Ive kicking around ideas about making a a bolt together steel riser for kicks. Its fun to see someone else doing it. Thats different style than I was thinking of, but its really cool.

Hopefully I didn't ruin it by drilling too many holes. I'll be checking it today to be sure it doesn't twist
