Default DO EAT an Avocado

The avocado is believed to have originated in Puebla, Mexico. The oldest evidence of the avocado was found in a cave in Puebla, Mexico and dates back to around 10,000 BC.

Native to Mexico and Central America, the avocado is classified in the same family as camphor and cinnamon. An avocado is botanically, a large berry that grows on a tree that can reach 6 feet tall. Just like a banana, the avocado ripens 1-2 weeks after being picked.

Avocados are often referred to as the healthiest food due to its impressive nutritional value.

An avocado contains these vitamins and minerals:
Vitamin B1
Vitamin B2
Vitamin B3
Vitamin B5
Vitamin B6
Vitamin B9
Vitamin C
Vitamin E
Vitamin K
Calcium
Iron
Magnesium
Manganese
Phosphorus
Sodium
Zinc

•An avocado contains more potassium than a banana. Avocados have 14% and a banana contains 10% potassium.

•Folate for your heart’s health. Avocados have 23% folate which lowers incidences of heart disease. Vitamin E, monounsaturated fats and glutathione are also good for the heart. Folate can lower the risks of having a stroke.

•Folate is also essential in the prevention of birth defects such as spina bifida and neural tube defect.

•Eating avocados help our body’s absorb 5 times the amount of carotenoids (lycopene and beta carotene).

•Eye Heath- Avocados contain more carotenoid lutein than any other fruit, protecting against macular degeneration and cataracts.

•High in beta-sitosterol, avocados lower bad cholesterol by 22%, raises good cholesterol by 11% and also lowers blood triglycerides by 20%.

Sam,

I believe you mean 60 feet, not 6 feet.

The tree we had in Trinidad grew huge avocados..

It's a ruse! Build a wall and make the Mexicans pay for it to keep out the avacados.

I cannot eat an avacado or anything made from them. Cilantro is another substance that should be banned.

Nothing scares me more than Mexican avacado and cilantro mules with big hips smuggling these illict agricultural products across the border.

Thanks Heathen, now I don't feel so bad about wanting to paraquat onions with aircraft.

Never ate guacamole because of onions. Never saw an avocado until my twenties when a buddy was eating one with a spoon. I tried it. It was kinda like my first taste of scotch. Not real impressed. Time goes by and hmm maybe I'll try that again. A little more time and I've got a craving

Love avocado, when I lived in Kauai we had a huge avocado tree in our front yard that produced avos the size of those kid sized footballs. They were good for about 3 months in the fall, walk out pick a good one off the ground and avocado added to just about any meal. We also had guava, coconut, banana, and oranges in the yard. We had so many avos the wife actually tried to make an avocado pie. One of our coworkers had a recipe. I would not recommend it at all, goes bad really fast.

I've tried guacamole. Meh. I figure if something needs onions added for flavor, it sucks. (I like the paraquat-the-onions idea a lot!)

But with the health benefits listed in the OP, I guess I'll have to try one 'naked' and maybe figure how to make it taste good. A Tex-Mex chain near here did 'avocado fries' which were still bland, so I guess these things have 'bland power' going ;-)

Update - if you google how to make avocados taste good you get links to a lot of interesting stuff

Tried them once when we moved to CA. Just North of San Diego used to be vast orchids of them. They are like "ice cream" to coyotes. Ranchers used to pay a bounty on yotes. You figure at least a buck or more East of the Mississippi and those yotes eating up some real profits. Used to ban imports but guess that got lifted through the years.
